Reiki

The word "Reiki" ('Ray-key')  is made up of two Japanese words(above):

"Rei" - meaning "universal,  spiritual or free flowing" and

"Ki" - meaning "life force energy"

Reiki is therefore "universal life force energy."

WHAT IS REIKI?

Reiki means "universal life energy" and is an ancient healing method that manipulates energy flow in the body. Reiki practitioners believe there is an energy force in and around the body. They believe that there is a flow of energy between the reiki practitioner and the receiver of the treatment. It is thought that reiki releases energy flows and allows the body's own natural healing ability to work.
Reiki focuses on seven main energy centers, called chakras, in your body. The energy should flow freely through your chakras in order for you to be spiritually, physically, and mentally healthy. Practitioners believe that if energy paths are blocked, you may feel ill or weak or have pain.
A reiki treatment session usually lasts an hour. The reiki practitioner puts his or her hands over or on your body at certain chakras. Most reiki practitioners recommend more than one session. Reiki can produce quite startling changes on the mental, emotional and physical levels when used as a treatment method. In fact, over the years Reiki seems to have dealt successfully with a huge range of problems and disorders, and I have found it to be effective in a wide range of conditions. However, there is very little 'proper' scientific evidence to back up any claims made about the effectiveness of Reiki treatments, and all the evidence so far is anecdotal.

In my experience of treating a whole range of conditions, Reiki seems to produce fast and long-lasting results in almost all cases of:

Stress, tension, anxiety and related symptoms

Sleeplessness

Emotional turmoil and discord

Feeling unable to cope

Low spirits, depression

...even when these problems have continued unresolved for years. Usually a course of four Reiki treatments at weekly intervals would seem to be enough to produce long-term beneficial changes in these areas.

Physical problems do seem to take longer to shift sometimes, but I have experienced Reiki being successful with all of the following, and others besides:

Sports injuries

Long term pain, e.g. back pain

Rheumatism, arthritis, sciatica, scoliosis

Low energy levels

Where Did Reiki Come From?

Dr. Mikao Usui, or Usui Sensei as he is called by his students in Japan, is the founder of the Usui System of Reiki. He was born August 15, 1865 in the village of Yago in the Yamagata district of Gifu prefecture, Japan. Usui Sensei had an avid interest in learning and worked hard at his studies. He traveled to Europe and China to further his education. His curriculum included medicine, psychology, and religion. It is thought that he was from a wealthy family, as in Japan only the wealthy could afford to send their children to school. Eventually he became the secretary to Shinpei Goto, head of the department of health and welfare who later became the Mayor of Tokyo. The connections Usui Sensei made at this job helped him to become a successful businessman.
In March, 1922, Usui's personal and business life was failing. As a sensitive spiritualist, Usui Sensei had previously spent much time meditating at power spots on Mt. Kurama. So he decided to travel to this holy mountain where he enrolled in Isyu Guo, a twenty-one-day training course. We do not know for certain what he was required to do during this training, but it is likely that fasting, meditation, chanting and prayers were part of the practice. In addition, we know there is a small waterfall on Mt. Kurama where even today people go to meditate. This meditation involves standing under the waterfall and allowing the waters to strike and flow over the top of the head, a practice which is said to activate the crown chakra. Japanese Reiki Masters think that Usui Sensei may have used this meditation as part of his practice. In any case, it was during the Isyu Guo training that the great Reiki energy entered his crown chakra. This greatly enhanced his healing abilities and he realized he had received a wonderful new gift - the ability to give healing to others without depleting his own energy!
Accepting the responsiblity to practice and teach this new gift, Usui Sensei created a Reiki school called the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai. He also further developed Reiki creating the various levels of trainng, adding 3 symbols to the practice and developing an attunement method.
